How Might We Help Children Keep Exercising and Socializing During Covid-19?
Yopic
Yopic is a yoga learning system that offers a subscription website and a webcam. It aims to motivate children to do enough physical activities and build connections with friends during COVID-19. This project is a concept design. We were unable to test with children during the pandemic period.

Background
The Influence from Pandemic
Due to the COVID-19, most children are only able to keep learning at home through online courses. Numerous children feel fear, loneliness, and anxiety during the pandemic period, as well as worry about their future according to the report from United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund .
25%
Children Feel Anxious
15%
Children Feel depressed
When we searched on the Internet......
We found that child's physical and mental health are threatened by the pandemic. We discovered children's actual feelings during this period from the schools' online diaries opened to the public.
Chief Problems
Insufficient outdoor activities
Children cannot go outside to release their energy because of the pandemic. Their physical health will suffer from inadequate lighting.
Insufficient social interaction
Interaction with peers is essential for helping children develop their identities. The pandemic threatens children's mental health by hindering their ability to build a sense of belonging among peers.
Ideation
To address the issues of insufficient outdoor activities and limited social interaction, we created a mind map to brainstorm three key goals:
(1) keep social distance,
(2) maintain physical activity, and
(3) increase social contact.
Based on these goals, we chose kids' yoga and collaboration platforms as the core elements of our design.
Design Direction
Kid Yoga
Kids yoga aims to relax and have fun while promoting immunity, concentration, and muscle growth in young learners.
Design group photos on the collaboration platform
Through a collaboration platform, children can keep in touch with peers and save digital memories.
Design Concept
Yopic is a yoga learning system that offers a subscription website and a webcam.
Children learn to do yoga by following yoga poses images and sound instructions on the platform. While children are doing yoga, the webcam takes pictures of children's yoga poses and removes the backgrounds of portraits during the process. Finally, children can select their photos as materials to design a group photo with their friends after exercising.
Test for Ergonomics
01 The Height of the child's desk
Findings: Set the phone 30 cm high above the table
Taiwanese children between the ages of 8 and 12 stand between 120 and 150 centimeters tall. The ideal desk height is around 55 cm for anyone under 120 cm.
The desk height should thereafter be increased by 5 cm for every 10 cm in height, and so on. As a result, Children taller than 150 cm require a desk that is 75 cm high.
However, the test measured the designer's height, 165 cm, which was the limitation of this design. It was hard to recruit children as subjects during the pandemic.
The scenario of the measurement
02 Try out different angles of the lens
Findings: 120° wide-angle lens is suitable for taking picture
To take pictures of the entire body, we tested two different types of lenses. The wide-angle of a phone's lens is typically 84° wide-angle. However, when practicing stretching positions, the hands and feet can easily go beyond the camera range.
We discovered that a 120° wide-angle lens is suitable. Users should keep a distance of between 100 and 130 cm from the lens in order to take the perfect picture of themselves doing yoga without being overly distorted.
User Flow
Reflection
Finding children to conduct user testing is risky. Finding children to conduct user testing was more challenging than before due to COVID-19. As a result, we were unable to test Yopic with actual users. The next time, prior to developing ideas, the design risk level should be taken into account to collect more valuable feedback.
